INDIGO is very well designed and built. She is structurally in very sound condition and has received excellent care over her years.
Dieter Empacher, former chief designer of Little Harbor Yachts owned by Ted Hood, was commissioned in 1984 to design a bluewater cruiser/racer to sail anywhere in the world. Welded aluminum was chosen for its high strength-to-weight properties, for its high impact resistance in case of grounding or striking an object at sea, and for its overall strength of hull and superstructure according to conservative design specifications. The yacht was designed to be fast, seakindly and capable of being sailed short-handed. She is also absolutely beautiful.
Weatherly and comfortable on the wind, with her near 12’ of draft with the centerboard down, but with a draft of less than 6’ with the board up. INDIGO can get into many places other 52’ yachts cannot.
As beautiful below as she is above, INDIGO’s cabin has high headroom, and is finished throughout with high-quality varnished teak joinerwork. Her cabin sole is of fine hand-laid teak and holly construction.
The year after her launching, she was first to finish and then first in her class (corrected time) in the 1985 Marion to Bermuda Race. Since then, she has had three owners, all of whom lavished her with constant upgrades and meticulous maintenance. She has never wanted for anything.

The roomy sail locker forward is connected by a door to the Formica-lined, teak-trimmed fully-enclosed owner’s shower, plumbing disconnected. There are lockers providing six shelves of storage on either side of the shower. Abaft the shower lockers is the head, with new sink with Kohler fixtures (2013) to port, Raritan toilet to starboard, two opening ports and a hatch. The portholes are kept open when moored, even in the rain, for ample breezes. The counters throughout the yacht are off-white Formica. Overheads are off-white vinyl panels with varnished teak trim between; all other finishes are varnished teak.
The owner’s stateroom occupies the area between the forward head and the main bulkhead just forward of the mast. The stateroom has a queen-sized bed to port, with cavernous finished lockers and drawers under the mattress, and a chest of drawers at the foot of the bed with lockers above. There is a large vanity or desk with swing-out stool to starboard. An elegant mounted shelf, above the outboard edge of the bed, and two bookshelves above the head of the bed, combine with the cedar-paneled double-door hanging locker and nineteen drawers and lockers to provide an abundance of stowage.
Continuing aft, the salon has an L-shaped settee (with storage under) to port and settee to starboard, both of which make up to double berths. When moored, ten adults (six at sea) can sleep in the berths below, if desired (all berths have fitted lee cloths). The dining table, of white oak and teak, with a drop leaf, sits just to port of amidships. Above the port settee are lockers and bookshelves. Above and outboard of the starboard settee are lockers and a Pioneer stereo system (new 2016) with eight Bose speakers throughout the cabins. Centerline aft of the salon is a forward companionway hatch like the primary one leading to the cockpit; it is protected by a dodger, providing excellent ventilation while at sea.
Aft of the starboard settee is the spacious U-shaped galley, out of the traffic flow, making it a comfortable space to work and cook, in port and at sea. Excellent ventilation via an overhead hatch, opening port and fan. Double galley sink with backup plumbing of foot-pumped fresh water and pressurized seawater. There is a deep pot locker in the counter and plenty of stowage for food, dry goods, utensils, glasses and plates. Freezer and fridge both open from the top, with additional access to the fridge via a door on its aft face. Each unit is about 15 cu. ft. and has shelves and dividers. A gimbaled, 3-burner Force 10 stove with oven and broiler (new 2002) with removable Formica cover, is fitted with a propane solenoid switch for added safety.
To port, on the other side of the forward companionway, is the roomy nav station, comfortable on any tack, with a large chart table with generous stowage beneath. Electronics and the electrical panel are above. Between the nav station and the galley is the passageway leading aft to the main companionway area.
The other two staterooms surround the engine room under the aft cockpit. To port of the galley sink (the aft side of the U) is the aft head, including a large stall shower, new sink with Kohler fixtures (2013), counter, lockers and Raritan toilet. Access to the shower may be gained via a door abeam the galley sink or from within the second cabin. This shower stall also doubles as a wet hanging locker. Thus, the port quarter berth cabin, including its head and shower, can be closed off with a door, providing privacy. The starboard quarter berth does not have its own cabin, but has access to the head through the galley doorway. Both quarter berths are quite large and can serve as double berths. Seven fans serve all the berths, the galley, the salon and the forward head.
Access to the engine room is excellent through three large hatches.
Aluminum hull, deck and cabin house built on angle frames with closely-spaced T-longitudinals, lead keel and balanced partial skeg rudder. Integral welded aluminum rub rail on hull with stainless steel rub rail on vertical outside surface. 5/8” hand-laid teak decking on top of 1/2” pressure-treated marine plywood. Plywood laid on aluminum plate decking with West Epoxy, teak planks laid with Teak Decking Systems epoxy; laid during rebuilds in 2003, and later on, main decking, cockpit floor and cockpit seats. Cabin top has original 3/4” hand-laid teak decking with minimal wear.
INDIGO has a minimum draft of 5’-3” with centerboard up and a maximum draft of 11’ with board down.

Simrad AP60 autopilot (new, 2016), including custom waterproof handheld remote in cockpit, based on Simrad QS80 Quick Stick Remote, with cable, at companionway for use anywhere in cockpit. Hydraulic drive on dedicated tiller on rudder post below deck.
Furuno model 1835 color LCD radar, 4 kW, dome antenna mounted on radar tower on stern. Interfaced with Furuno fluxgate compass, Furuno GPS and ICOM AIS (installed new, 2013). AIS and ARPA integrated features. Located at nav station.
Remote 1835 slave unit with color display, integrated with the Furuno 1835 located in the nav station, is mounted in cockpit on top of cabin top inside dodger, visible from entire cockpit, including steering wheel (new 2013).
B&G, with main unit in nav station and remote repeaters for wind speed, wind relative direction, magnified wind direction for close-hauled sailing, depth sounder mounted in cockpit on bridge display panel over companionway slide for easy viewing from entire cockpit. Spare B&G depth sounder. Main pedestal-mounted Ritchie steering compass, 8” diameter with chromed brass cover (serviced, 2016)
Chart plotting is done with laptop computer with Furuno’s GPS data and ICOM AIS data fed into laptop via two cables. In U.S., Richardson chart plotting software is used with raster charts. In the cockpit an independent Apple iPad with GPS-receiving capability is used, also with Richardson chart plotting software with raster charts, identical to the Richardson charts used below on the laptop. Note: the laptop and iPad are NOT included with the sale of INDIGO.
Two separate Grunert systems sharing the same cold plates; one compressor driven by main engine, the other driven by AC current accepting 110V AC/60 or 50 Hz and capable of being run simultaneously with the engine-driven system by means of a 2.5 kW inverter. This minimizes pump-down times to 60 minutes, twice a day, in the tropics, and less in northern waters.
All sails in excellent condition.
Mast and Rigging:
Welded fabrication by Belamy, with tapered masthead section. Painted Awlgrip “Bright White”. All halyards internal. Two jib/genoa halyards, two spinnaker halyards, spare mainsail halyard used for storm trysail, dedicated track for storm trysail, Antal mainsail track to accommodate full-batten mainsail slides. Wide and open area around mast for ease of working around mast, with good teak decking on cabin top. Spinnaker pole with Sparcraft fittings stowed on mast with mast track.
Boom is also fabricated by Belamy. Welded construction, multiple sheaves at end to accommodate mainsail outhaul, topping lift, 3-slab reefing lines for mainsail clews when reefed, all internal. Sheet stoppers for halyards on mast. Dedicated Lewmar winch on aft side of mast for control of above lines.
All running rigging in ‘new to good’ condition.
Note: All winches are Lewmar self-tailing, stainless steel, except for the Merriman centerboard winch.
