Dream of cruising to far horizons? This Valiant 42 is the consummate bluewater cruising sailboat in the 40’ range. Ahead of its time when conceived, the Valiant 40 was eventually inducted into the American Sailboat Hall of Fame as one of most outstanding production-built designs ever built.  ENDEAVOR has the optional and more desirable Center Entry arrangement, which allows for larger staterooms at both ends, and the head compartment aft. Interior woodworking is in rich, hand-rubbed oiled American cherry, and in very nice condition. (12) Hood opening ports are of stainless steel. (6) Lewmar Ocean Series overhead hatches add additional light and ventilation, as do (2) Dorade ventilators with stainless cowls near the front of the coach roof. Hull ceilings are of ash staving. Very sturdy teak & holly cabin sole – ½” solid wood on ¾” marine plywood. Overhead liner with removable panels.

  • Forwardmost is a stateroom, with centerline double berth; port & starboard settees with storage behind; storage lockers above the berth to either side; and access to the chain locker at the forward bulkhead.
  • Next aft is the salon area, with L-settee to port and straight settee to starboard; double dropleaf table on centerline; storage lockers above and behind to either side; and the mast is amidships just aft, so unobstructed sightlines across in the entire salon area.
  • Amidships to port is the deep, U-shaped galley, with outboard gimbaled, 4-burner LPG stove/oven; extra large divided icebox; double-deep stainless steel sinks; storage outboard and below the counter; and a storage pantry opposite the galley.
  • Galley equipment includes: Sea Frost 120V cold-plate and 12V evaporator-type refrigeration systems, with external gauges for the icebox; Regal 2 stainless steel LPG stove, with oven and broiler; hot & cold pressure water system plus a fresh water foot pump; and a built-in Princess microwave oven w/ carousel.
  • To starboard just aft of the salon is the nav station, with forward-facing nav desk; storage in and under the desk; radios and nav display outboard; deluxe electrical distribution panel outboard; and bench seat with storage under.
  • Aftmost to port is a second private stateroom, with double berth; small settee outboard with storage locker behind; and large bulkhead cutout near centerline for added light and ventilation.
  • On centerline is the companionway, with swing-up stairs and removable box to access the engine compartment; overhead sliding hatch; and solid teak drop-boards.
  • Aftmost to starboard is the head compartment, with separate shower stall; manual marine toilet; vanity sink with storage under and outboard; and access behind the toilet to an “equipment compartment,” which lies alongside the engine compartment.

  • Note: The original Westerbeke 5KW genset is installed in a stern lazarette, and inoperable at this time. It may be possible to have the unit serviced to operable condition, but recent inspection recommended replacement as most cost-effective, or the unit could be removed to reclaim storage space. Current A/C system, water maker and 110V freezer system rely on an AC source of power when away from the dock. The current status of the genset was taken into consideration when establishing an asking price, so not being offered in operable condition.


Sails & Rigging:

  • Keel-stepped spar system; double-spreader, tapered mast w/ internal halyards.
  • LPU-painted mast & boom in extruded aluminum.
  • Cutter rig configuration, w/ running backstays and furling headsail & staysail.

  • Running rigging is braided Dacron, and virtually all replaced since 2008, typically with Samson XLS, XLS Extra or WarpSpeed II as called for.
  • Schaefer 3000 headsail and 2000 staysail furling systems – headsail furling drum refurbished (2017).
  • (14) rope clutches replaced w/ Spinlock XCS Powerclutches (2009).
  • Spinnaker pole stored on the mast w/ Antal adjustable pole-lift system.
  • Navtec hydraulic backstay adjuster (refurbished 2017).
  • Lewmar Ocean Series winches: (2) 62CST primaries; (3) 40CST housetop; (1) 44CST housetop for the mainsheet; (1) 40CST halyard at the mast – all winches cleaned & refurbished as needed (2012).
  • Mainsail mid-boom sheeting w/ Lewmar adjustable mainsheet traveler – (4) new Schaefer M82 blocks (2011).
  • Dual preventer system for boom, w/ (4) new Schaefer blocks (2014).
  • New set of North NPC Radian sails (2011): 8.2oz mainsail; 8.2oz 140% furling headsail; 9.4oz furling staysail (headsail removed & cleaned 2017).
  • 1.5oz tri-radial asymmetrical cruising spinnaker w/ furling sock.
  • Mainsail w/ full battens & two sets of reef points; STRONG Sail Track & Slide System on the mast; main halyard and all reefing leech/luff lines lead aft to the cockpit housetop winches; adjustable lazy jacks.
  • Mack Sails Mack Pack mainsail storage system w/ integral lazy jacks.
  • (4) halyards for headsail, spare headsail, staysail & spinnaker exit to the mast halyard winch w/ rope clutches; main halyard led aft to the cockpit.
  • All control lines for the boom topping lift, pole lift, staysail sheets, reefing lines, mainsheet & adjustable traveler run aft to the cockpit housetop winches.
  • (2) furling and (2) preventer control lines lead aft to rope clutches on either side of the cockpit coamings.
  • Windex at the masthead.


Deck Equipment & Features:

  • Bow pulpit, stern pulpit and stanchions in stainless steel, minimum 30” w/ boarding gates both sides and double lifelines in vinyl-coated stainless steel wire (2011).
  • Bow pulpit integral to the heavy-duty stainless steel bow/anchor platform.
  • Solid stainless top rails from the stern pulpit to the boarding gates.
  • Stanchions are bulwark-mounted, so no penetrations in the deck.
  • Full-length, heavy-duty extruded aluminum toerails, w/ mid-deck chocks.
  • (6) stainless steel mooring cleats at bow, stern & amidships.
  • Stainless steel, folding boarding ladder w/ teak treads mounts at starboard gate.

  • Fortress FX-23 secondary anchor stores on the bow pulpit; available ground tackle is 50’ 5/16” chain & 280’ nylon rode; stainless steel anchor shackle (2010).
  • Danforth 20H Hi-Tensile 20# stern anchor stores on the stern pulpit; ground tackle w/ 36’ chain and 170’ nylon rode stows in a stern anchor locker w/ hawse in the coaming top and double-roller.
